Sample AP Spanish Lesson

Objective:  Students will compare Family Traditions and Values in a Spanish-speaking country vs their hometown situation
Students will communicate completely in Spanish
Students will use communication cues from their partner to respond accordingly
Students will use background information from a story and a conversation to include accurate, descriptive explanations
Students will set up a Skype account

Lesson:
First, students must have a functioning Skype account:  http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home
Students will find me sennje20
I am also thinking students will have the option to record a podcast if they so choose.  This is something I am not completely familiar with, but am open to suggestions on how to best have students present this in an online setting.
Students will read through the conversation text, the informational article and the YouTube video
Article:
Video:
La familia hispana

Next, students will be assigned a partner.  One partner must play the role of the hometown student and the other student is from a Spanish-speaking country.

Students will set up a time during the week with me to Skype and they will have a 1-2 minute conversation about the differences.  They will also be expected to have a 1-2 minute conversational response with me for follow-up questions.

Students will be assessed on the following:

  1. Use of current vocabulary in the conversation
  2. Ability to respond on the spot with appropriate responses
  3. Inclusion of the references from readings and prior knowledge
  4. Comfort of language and flow of conversation
  5. Appropriate cultural references

Time to complete lesson:  Students will be given assignment on a Sunday evening post and must set up a time by Saturday evening to meet with me.

Follow-up:  The next discussion will focus around how these values and customs affect society, the economy and education.  Debates about change over time and paradigm shifts will be a focus, as well.
For me, teaching a foreign language, the communication between students is going to be an extremely important thing.  I really want to utilize collaborative learning for my students, including lots of peer review and analysis.  This is the best way, especially because I have many native speakers.  They will find a sense of autonomy and personal responsibility.  Also, I think my non-native speakers will respond to these types of interactions and feel less pressure expressing themselves.
